"Camping Prohibited" (NYS specific)

Am I losing my mind or does the DEC go out of its way to post "Camping Prohibited" signs in spots most suitable for camping in the backcountry? Even 150+ft. from the trail and/or water, if it's anywhere near flat there seems to be one of those damn signs stuck to a tree.

Is this done out of concern for minimizing forest fire potential, or does the DEC believe that backcountry camping means being crammed into the 25 flat sq. ft near a lean-to with 10 other people?

Maybe they're trying to give those places a rest. They've probably been beat up (or down) for years.
