Just tossing this out: If you do a lot of 'whackin, I wonder if you could rig something up, like "arm gaiters", maybe use actual gaiters or old sleeves, to use while in the thick and then remove. Just a thought.

Check into cycling gear, they have many variations of arm gaiters available. I use mine when hiking since I hike hot, and it's nice to put them on to bridge the gap between t-shirt and longsleeve without having to change shirts.

They make them in waterproof fabric as well as wicking.

I believe you are referring to Arm Warmers:

And they are awesome for hiking too -- Instant air conditioning, so to speak.

Farmer, did you get a shell? If so, what did you choose?

Blatant plug!

I have not made a final decision yet but I will definitely be going with something from Wild Things. I did pick up the guide pack which is totally awesome and will be with me on every hike this winter. They have great products that are top of the line but are simplified don't have a lot of extra BS and weight added on for the Tchochke lovers. I've spent time there looking at different models and supporting a local brand is my bag baby!
