Sounds you love in the woods

Happened to be thinking about this while out on a hike the other day.
What sounds in the woods really do it for you, day or night?

Coyotes howling in the dark
Turkey gobbles as dawn breaks
Hiking companions' laughter
Train whistle at night
White Throated Sparrow greeting you near treeline
Ravens in the fog
October leaves crunching under boots
Elk bugling

Pileated woodpeckers, thrushes, hawks.
You're hiking a protected trail on a really cold day while the wind roars in the trees overhead.
The sound of snow falling, and also the sight of snow falling soundlessly.
The swoosh of my skis.

Loon calls.

Owls hooting.
The sound of a spring, especially if I'm thirsty!
Definitely the White Throated Sparrow!
The screech of a Hawk.

The frantic screams of short pantted hikers walking through a thicket of nettles.

The sound of porcupines scurrying around the leanto

The smell of white gas as your prime the stove.

Jay

Hearing a pair of hermit thrushes calling to one another, from either side of the trail.

Water gurgling in a brook.

Chickadees
The sound of silence while enjoying the view from a mountain top
Raven calls
When car camping, the sound of wood crackling in a fire
Cars driving down the road when returning from a long hike

Most definitely.

And, the occasional shriek of a red squirrel from a nearby tree, defending its territory and daring you to step closer.

The lack of sound, when you can find it…or not find it.

Have to admit I try and imitate these when no one (or I think) is around:

C-r-ruck C-r-ruck (Raven calls)
Old Sam Peabody Peabody (White Throated sparrow)

Also enjoy these:

Boreal Chickadees
Thrushes
Streams and brooks

Does silence count as a sound?

Wood thrush for sure, white throated sparrow, red squirrel, drumming partridge, and the wind!

The sound of raindrops falling through the leaves after the rain has stopped and a gentle wind blows.

The sound of rain falling on my tarp while I swing slowly underneath in a hammock.

Groans and moans as fellow hikers move for the 1st time in the morning after a long hike the day before.

My dog's collar and tags rythmically jingling up the trail.

Most of the above, but especially the Winter Wren.

I am slightly hard of hearing so I hear less than many of my friends do, though sometimes I hear what they hoped I hadn't.

I like the birds......barred owls, pileated woodpeckers, red tailed hawks, chickadees who find you near the summit. I like the sound the leaves on the beech trees make in the winter when the wind blows. I like how ice on the tree branches sounds like wind chimes. I like the sound of running water.......of deer running through the woods. I like how in the winter when it's snowing it's so quiet that you don't hear a sound.

... ok, just kidding about the last few but here's a couple from out west ...

heavy breathing of bison reminiscent of old Peppersass
echos across canyons
strong prevailing westward winds
crystal clear cold mountain streams washing across the rocks
.... hmmm, that one's back east, too, but the Lochsa River was most memorable
"get outta my camp you damned grizzyargowll ..."

the sound of my snowboard bindings ratcheting.

Bare trees rubbing together in strong winds.
My parka hood flapping against my ears when the wind is howling.
A spruce grouse exploding out of the snow.
The squeak of very cold snow under my boots.
The bass drum in my ears that is my heart.
The sound of water running when it's 10 below.
The 'whump' from a snow bomb falling from a tree.
