Trails: Mt. Kinsman Trail and Kinsman Ridge Trail.

We headed up the Mt. Kinsman trail from the new parking lot which, coming in from the Kanc, is located just before the Tennis club rather than just after it as it was before.

The new trail from the parking lot to the logging road is very clearly laid out. There is just one blowdown on the entire trail. It is a 'crawl under' located just before the first stream crossing. The branches had been trimmed from the tree where is crosses the trail facilitating the passage. The footing is good right up to the Bald Peak spur. After that it deteriorates with some long stretches of exposed roots and becoming somewhat bony on the steeper sections.

The snow line started about 2500' and covered the trail three to four hundred feet higher. There was about 3" of snow up on the ridge. It also snowed a bit while we were up there. There were a few people who went up to North Kinsman today, but we were the only ones to continue on to South Kinsman.

The water was running high on the three stream crossings. It took some figuring to get across but it was doable although Lauky did go for a swim on the first crossing.

Special equipment: a pole or poles necessary for the stream crossings. Would also recommend microspikes for the snow and ice and gaiters for the slop.

South Kinsman was number 48 for both of us. Three year old Lauky finished his second round and it was my fourth round.

Milage 10 miles

Elevation gain about 3900'
