Mount Moriah via Carter Moriah Trail 1/8/11
Trails proved to be in good condition all around. I came expecting icy trails, given freeze after recent warm temps and rain. Trail ended up being nice mix of well packed shallow snow. Icy patches were widely scattered and trivial to negotiate. Hiked entire trail with microspikes.
Snow depths off trail currently is not very deep at lower elevations. Even at higher elevations snow depths were not that deep. Couldn’t pin a number on it, but one could fare pretty well with snow shoes off trail at higher elevations. Pretty good conditions out there for winter bushwhack hikes.
Much traffic on the trail this Saturday. One large AMC group and many other small parties.
