Date of hike: Friday, 1/14/11

Trail conditions: approx 6" of fresh snow

Special equipment: snowshoes on the ascent, bareboot descent but slippery

Comments: Zero degrees at trailhead 0830. No wind. Started with a little sun but clouded over within the first hour. Most of the way to Weetamoo junction we walked up some x-country ski tracks, then broke trail through new snow after that. Numerous sites of downed trees. Looked fairly recent but hard to tell for sure. Got to within approximately 1/2 mile of Jim Liberty cabin and turned back due to a section of severe tree damage blocking the trail. Would guess at 20-30 trees down in this last col crossing the trail. Five other hikers came part way up trail behind us so by the time of our descent trail was starting to get packed down a little. Most hikers will not be able to reach the summit via this route until forest service or AMC does significant amount of clearing in the spring.
