trails: stratton brook pond rd., firewardens trail, appalachian trail
conditions: parking at junction of stratton brook pond rd. and pond loop rd. for about 3-4 cars. from there road is snowmobile packed to stratton pond outlet. crossing was ok, but we circled out onto the ice to avoid rock hopping it with snowshoes on. snow was firm in the morning, but quite soft in the afternoon. some minor ice and exposed rock near the summits, but mostly just spring type snow. one impressive drift at treeline heading up west peak. some small streams open and easily crossed on firewardens trail.
equipment: snowshoes.
comments: great way to finish off winter. beautiful conditions with views stretching from katahdin to washington. nice to get back up in the maine peaks. it had been too long. an astounding number of deer out along route 16 on our drive home. thanks to jeremy for a great hike.
