It's elderberry (Sambucus sp.), probably Sambucus racemosa (red-berried elder) since the berries are red, vs. Sambucus nigra (purplish-black)

12. Goldenrod (Solidago sp.) by Elizabeth W.K., on Flickr
Is this Large-leaved Goldenrod?
probably, but not sure, you need basal leaves for certain. (which are large = a few inches wide) The wand-shaped stalk (no branch-shaped flower clusters) is good, so is the upper leaf shape, so is the habitat.

Thanks, as always, for your corrections. I thought perhaps the leaves were wrong for the berries to be Mountain Ash. Mostly black elderberry I have seen has a flatter-shaped umbel, so I'd go with red also (not unripe black).

Next time I see some of the same goldenrods, I'll look more closely at the basal leaves.

Syrphid fly, on Spirea (meadowsweet / steeplebush), on Agony Ridge.

The fly kept crawling around to the far side of the flower, so my assistant intervened.

There were numerous feeding frenzies around the wildflowers today. Every group of Joe-Pye Weed I saw had a swarm of insects around it. Even the crowd around the Monkeyflower below forced me to wait in line to get a clear shot at the flower. The bee/fly that you see crawled completely inside the flower, wiggled around inside and about 10 seconds later emerged with a nice dusting.

I've tried to look on-line, through this and past year's VFTT flowers thread and in Wildflower books - I can't find out what this is - any help appreciated.

Thanks!

Thank you!!!

Very much appreciated.

I came across several bogs near Nancy Pond which were loaded with Pitcher Plants. It was one of the buggiest paces I can remember while photographing wildflowers but I guess that's why the Pitcher Plants have set up camp there.

Bog Aster Aster nemoralis I found these along a stream bed and several other patches in the bogs.
