Some of the details in the article are wrong (it's hasn't been done every year, and it started in 1976 as the Bicentennial Portage) but it seems to be an annual event recently.

I've never been involved myself, but I have been hiking in the area when I spotted a canoe coming up the Ammy. Glad to see the tradition continues.
 
In response to the initial Bicentennial Portage I know someone who carried a kayak on a Presie Traverse; paddling across Star Lake, Lakes of the Clouds, and Saco Lake.
 
That is not a canoe.

Closer to Beer Can. I just finished this one today. It goes at least 120 lbs. and 20 ft. long. This would take a bit of effort. Sissies..:p
