Trails: Lincoln Woods; Black Pond bushwhack; Lincoln Brook on the way to the mountain; slide trail to the summit and down; Lincoln Brook and Franconia Brook on the way back.

Conditions: All trails were pretty clear of downed trees or brush from any storm activity. Plenty of mud on the Lincoln Brook and Franconia trails. The ascent on the slide was wet and icy, ok for bare-boot on the way up, but traction used on the way down. Stream crossings were all manageable.

Special Equipment: Microspikes were the only thing I added to the usual kit. More than enough for the way down the slide.

Comments: We were on the trail at 6:15. Amazing to see what Hurricane Irene did moving trees and digging riverbanks. Took the Black Pond Trail which, for some reason, we immediately lost. Followed another faint trail to the Franconia Falls Trail, which was a nice little side trip since we would otherwise have skipped the falls. From the end of that trail we bushwhacked over to Black Pond, then executed the bushwhack to Lincoln Brook trail without event. As mentioned above, the Lincoln Brook Trail had plenty of mud, but nothing unforgiving.

The slide afforded fantastic views in bright sunshine. There was a little snow on the ground, about 1/4 to 1/2 inch, to brighten the scene. No problems finding the old and new summits.

On the way out there was one sore knee in our group of two people, so we opted for the trails instead of the bushwhack. Larger river crossings were interesting but not problematic. As it got dark we missed a couple of turns on the trail where it went in and out of the old track bed on the Franconia Brook Trail. No big problems as we quickly realized our folly.

Out at 6:05, making it 11:50 for the day. Number 45 for me, Number 1 for buddy Brian. A fine first hike for him!

Nice to meet Frodo. Also, congrats to the group of 4 behind us and the fellow who was tagging # 48.
