Planned to hike a loop up to Paugus but had to change plans as there is no parking along the road at the Cabin Trail Head. Instead we went to Ferncroft (plenty of plowed parking). Kelley Trail conditions were snow, deep enough to snowshoe (which is what we used). After us microspikes would have been ok.
Lawrence and Old Paugus Trail to the ledges were the same though about .5 mile from ledges got sick of lifting a snowshoe covered with wet snow and went to microspikes. Stayed with the spikes on descent of OPT which is very steep and has many slippery spots that will only get worse. Once off the steeps we barebooted the rest of the way. Big Rock Cave Trail was packed (we packed the other trails). Lots of blowdowns which required climbing over or under on Old Paugus after the steep top section. The hike from Cabin Trail head to Ferncroft adds 1 mile to hike.
Lots of animal sign. Great views and BRC is pretty neat.
Our son joined us which always make the day better!
