Mt. Major via Boulder Loop and Brook Trails 1/1/12. Trail was wet and in some spots slippery due to small patches of melting ice. Summit and lower areas of the Brook trail were very muddy, some muddy areas deceivingly deep.
Special equipment needed: None on the ascent. We were able to find stable footing for our bare boots on most of the trail. Would recommend traction and poles on the descent however, even on Brook trail's mellow grade.
Gorgeous day to be hiking; conditions are certainly not what one would expect in winter. If you were planning on trying out the snowshoes or microspikes you got over the holidays, you were out of luck! Conditions should change tomorrow.
