Smarts Mt. - 2/12/12
Lambert Ridge Trail (ascent); Fire Warden's Trail (descent)
Conditions: Lambert Ridge Trail was a mix of bare rock, hard packed snow and ice. We used microspikes the entire way to the summit, although crampons would have been the better choice on the final .5 mile of the steep and very icy summit cone. The Smarts Fire Warden's Trail was mostly hardpacked snow the entire way out. Once down the steep section, I bare-booted the last few miles.
It was too cold today to linger... really must return as this was a gorgeous hike.
