Adams / Madison via Valley Way (17 Mar 2012)

Trail Conditions:

Minimal snow in woods down low.

Valley Way icy monorail from lot, w/ some mud. Transitions to slushy snow about where Beechwoodway comes in. Stream crossings open but easy. Higher up, streams can be heard rushing under the trail. Quite a bit of snow on the upper part of Valley Way in the woods, w/ postholes just off the middle of the trail. Several ice bulges. Snow had softened in the heat considerably by the end of the day, and was pretty lumpy going down.

Above timberline, lots of open rock w/ interspersed snowfields & ice.

Special Equipment Required: Some sort of traction on VW. I wore crampons up VW which was overkill, bareboots to the summits, and snowshoes most of the way down thru the slush til I ran out of snow.

Comments: Amazing how much snow has melted over the past few days. Things don't look/sound/smell like winter - it's definitely well into spring already. Tons of folks out today!
