John Sobitzer who just finished a second grid accompanied by the faithful Pepper just sent me this final tribute to Cinnillia:
Hi Ed:

Per and Helle led a very nice memorial/celebration hike for Cinnilla
on Moosilauke Friday. 10 years earlier on that date Per and Cinnilla
did their first 4K together via Glencliff. They almost didn’t make it
that day, but in the years that followed they sure did a lot of hiking
together, and became the best of companions. As you well know, hiking
together builds such a strong bond between man and dog and mountains;
it is hard to let go.

Per and his wife Helle made up little packages of Cinnilla’s ashes and
the group spread them on the summit. Georg brought ashes from his
dogs Emma and Toby, and spread them as well. It was windy, cold, icy
and sunny (to start); with grand vistas in all directions, and the
ashes were carried with the breeze. We might have even seen far
enough to make out a rainbow bridge in the distance. It was a fitting
farewell for such an accomplished hiker.

Bill commented that the whole thing was so nice he wanted the same for
himself. I presume he meant in the future.

Pepper seemed somber on the hike down. Many of the hiking dogs of his
generation have passed on, but Cinnilla was the one with whom he
shared many hiking adventures. Perhaps he was just tired from the
extra hiking we had done this week, or perhaps it was just in contrast
to Georg’s young dog Lucy, the kid of our group, full of the boundless
enthusiasm of youth. But dogs are good at sensing our emotions and
perhaps he picked up on that. He let Helle pick him up and happily
lay in her arms at the lunch stop at the Carriage Path intersection,
something he has never let anyone do but me.

I just received the following note from John Sobitzer:

"In case you didn't see it, Hannah (of Hikes with Hannah) and her pal
Sarah, finished their Grids. Hannah is the fourth dog to finish a
Grid now."

Congratulations to Hanna. :)

John also added this comment: " I've forgotten to mention this for quite a while but did you notice
that The 48 in 1 Winter web page went "dead" a year or so ago, after
not being updated for a couple of years? The link from the Hiking
Grid page is dead too as well. I don't know what happened to all that
data. The sub page for dogs doing the SSW48 is gone with the rest."

Glad we can make some mention of them here. :)

Hannah finished her winter 48 (and her 5th round!) today on Mt. Adams. Of course she's happy hiking anywhere and doesn't care about lists, but I'm very very proud of my hiking beast!

John Sobitzer just let we know that a very special word of congratulations is due for Cole who just finished the Grid. That's a fantastic accomplishment. Besides John's dog Pepper I can't remember what other dogs have done that. When John gives me the update I'll post it here.

I've already heard back from John, here's his response concerning the canine grid finishers:

I just saw your VFTT post Ed so here's a quick list of the known dog Grid finishers: Pepper, Kali, Pemi, Hannah and now Cole.

Pepper's pal Cinnilla was close to finishing when the accumulated injuries from playing in her own yard forced her into early retirement.

I was thinking about all the great hiking dogs there were when Pepper was young and so many like Lauky have crossed the rainbow bridge now. Whether they finished a Grid or not matters little; what counts were all the days they were out on the trails with us, two small souls moving through our vast forests and mountains, sharing our joys and adventures. I picture them all now on the other side of the rainbow bridge, romping with each other, with an eye out for us. It won't be long.

John

Love these puppies. My own is a sweetheart. Met several nice dogs on my hike today in the Adirondacks.

Gotta be honest. I sob out loud when I read about the Rainbow Bridge. If anyone you know has lost a pet, spare them any discussion of that.

Canine Winter 48 Finisher #26 - Eva - with Donna Dearborn ("winnie"). Congratulations!
