Date of Hike: Saturday, March 31, 2012

Trail Conditions: Frozen, wet trail trail for the first mile or so, then building into 1-2 inches of snow. Just below Starr King (around the spring) long patches of ice covered with an inch or so of snow - very slick. Summit of Starr King and ridge to Waumbek had approximately 3 inches, with solid monorail, but significantly post-holed in areas. As the day progressed, the snow started softening/melting quickly.

Special Equipment Required: Bare-booted about halfway up to Starr King. Put on MicroSpikes around the spring where we encountered long, very slick icy patches. Kept the MicroSpikes on until nearly bare ground about a mile from the trailhead. Trekking poles were a necessity because if we weren't slipping on ice, we were slipping in mud, lower down.
