Out and back via Garfield Trail (although on the way down, much of it was Garfield River!)
What a great day for a hike, and this one had a little of everything: dry ground, wet ground, rivers running down the trail, mud, snow, ice and a couple good blasts of wind.
We started up about 8:45 AM and were glad to get moving to shake off the chills -- temps in the car driving up were hovering around 30 degrees. The river crossing were not that bad, although we used the bushwhack on the first crossing to find a suitable spot - and with the snow and ice on the stepping stones, it made the traverse interesting.
The trek up in the morning was much better than coming down because most of the water on the trail was frozen. (By afternoon, most had thawed and become an absolute mess.)
Our MicroSpikes didn't come out until we were well into the switchbacks, but remainded until we were well out of the switchbacks in the descent.
I must confess -- I believe around this point, we passed the distinguished Big Earl and Trail Trotter -- but it took my son to point it out to me -- as he recognized you, after the fact, from the photos on Views -- Sorry about the BigEarl and Trail Trotter!
Once around the switchbacks, it was simply a beautiful day in the Whites. After trudging through quite a bit of muddy, wet trail, we got down around 2:30 PM, and we added #36 to our list!
