Last summer, the Lake Placid Shore Owners Association (SOA) decided to close off access to the trails on private land on the west shore of Lake Placid. This means that the Chipmunk Lane access described in the ADK guide and other guides is no longer possible. Consequently, the loop trip on McKenzie Mt. with a return via Bartlett Pond is no longer possible.
Still legal, even though it crosses a bit of private land, is the approach to Loch Bonnie and Moose Mt. from the small shoreline owned by the state just south of Undercliff. This requires a canoe or kayak to access.
As mentioned in earlier posts, the DEC is aware of this closure and is interested in a route to these peaks on state land; but first the Unit Management Plan for this unit must be approved with the trails on state land included in the approved plan.
