Wow, that is pretty wild. I wonder if Rippe got chewed out by his superiors afterward? Can't imagine free soloing is in the SOP. But there's the letter of the law and the spirit of the law, and it's nice to think that Rippe has the spirit part - that he is part of an SAR team because he in fact really wants to help people, even if it means ignoring SOP from time to time and endangering his own life. Bravo.
