trails: ausable road, lake road trail, gill brook cut-off, trail to colvin/blake, carry trail, sawteeth via wardens camp trail, scenic trail

conditions: generally dry trail up to colvin. more muddy and slick to the colvin/blake col then continued muddy with wet ledge on the ascent of blake. carry trail nice up high, but badly eroded lower down. trail a bit obscure where it crosses the brook in a couple of places. once down and across the ausable it runs smooth and flat to wardens camp. trail to sawteeth almost immediately makes a water crossing which is not well marked on the far side and then climbs with surprisingly nice footing to sawteeth. i got the impression this piece of trail does not receive a lot of use. even the steepest sections have little to no erosion. scenic trail is just that with typical steep and rough footing. side trail to marble point was in good shape. the area around the lookout was recently burned by a small forest fire which was a bit sad to see. it's easy to understand why that was a tough one to get completely extinguished given its location. a couple nusiance blowdowns on the trail to blake and on the ascent to sawteeth. all water crossings were not a problem or were bridged.

equipment: water filter a good idea given the length of the hike and there are good sources along the way.

comments: nice long day. was pretty beat by the end of this one. drove up early from nh and hit the trail a bit after 7am. great views from colvin and sawteeth with lots of rugged climbing in between. nice views to lower ausable lake and the surrounding peaks on the descent of the scenic trail. out in plenty of time to grab a bed at the keene valley hostel (highly recommended) and dinner at the noonmark.
