trails: old speck trail, grafton loop trail (west branch), roadwalk

conditions: parked in the grafton loop lot at the start of the east branch of the trail. there is no parking at the start of the west branch so it requires a .6 mile roadwalk from the east lot. trail up old speck in good shape. a bit damp in spots. grafton loop also wet at times with some mud and slippery rocks, roots, bog bridging, etc. footing is mostly decent with some erosion, mud and standing/running water in places. trail is generally well marked and brushed. potential for some confusion in the lower portion of the grafton loop trail where it crosses and follows woods roads and snowmobile trails, but there are signs at junctions and with a little care it shouldn't be an issue. campsites all looked nice with good water sources, bear boxes, privy, etc. water crossings all fine with numerous small crossings in the lower part of the grafton loop trail.

equipment: nothing in particular.

comments: beautiful day. great views from old speck, but truly spectacular ones from sunday river whitecap. a real nice summit. nice quiet walking along the grafton loop trail. we never saw anyone the rest of the day after leaving old speck. thanks to jeremy for a good hike.
