Date of hike: Sunday 9/30/2012
Trail conditions: generally wet, but moderately muddy. Most of trail had a thin layer of debris that kept mud to a minimum. Trail is clear of blowdowns and the like. Hiking poles and good boots help.
General comments: One of my favorite forest hikes now. It's in a section of lush forest with areas carpeted with moss and lichens. Really neat trail and quite easy. Was quite appro for a rainy day, as the forest, more than the views (which were, uh, limited that day ) is the focus. Enjoyed that the elevation delta between Starr King and Waumbek is next to nothing. Will go back in the winter.
Was glad to see that trailhead road has been cleared of rather large rock that many years ago nearly took out my old Honda Accord's oilpan! Still, as another poster commented, the last bit of road leading to the trailhead is rather lumpy, so taking your time, or driving in with a high clearance vehicle would probably help. A friend drove his subaru wagon in, and that handled it fine.
