Thumbs up Middle and South Carter via... see post for trails - 1/5/13

Trails: Up via Imp Trail (south portion), North Carter Trail, Carter-Moriah Trail, down via Carter Dome Trail, 19-Mile Brook Trail.

Date of Hike: Jan. 5, 2013

Trail Conditions: All Trails were broken to some degree (at minimum we had hardpack under drifted snow on the way up and on the ridge) and the crossings were fully bridged and supportive. All Trails were clear of blowdowns with exception to the Imp Trail and/or North Carter Trail which offered an easy-over and an easy-under or two as I recall. The Carter-Moriah Trail was mostly wind drifted until we encountered some friends between summits headed the way we came -- we were both happy to see each other and grateful for the other's labor contribution. The biggest challenge to the ridge were the rime-laden spruces closing in on the trail, rock-hard, unyielding bent-overs that fight back when you push them. The Carter Dome Trail and the 19-Mile Brook Trail were both well-packed out and easy to navigate. No ice noted. Snow is still soft and loose off trail, and can be almost too yielding on-trail in spots on some steep sections (one step forward, two steps back).

Special Equipment Used: Microspikes and crampons weren't needed (though we had them), but snowshoes were certainly required. Trekking poles helped with balance on the snowshoes.

Comments: Hiked this one with Bill Robichaud (brobichaud here on the VFTT). We were joined by a Facebook friend, Jes. We ran into a few folks having a great day, in addition to our aforementioned friends. We did the loop clockwise going up Imp (taking the shortcut by the AMC property near the 19-Mile Brook Trail lot). We had hoped on doing Carter Dome, too, but it didn't happen. Bummer about that, but it was a gorgeous day albeit windy at times, and patches of sun, good to be out.
