Trail Conditions: General conditions for all trails noted were loosely consolidated powder on top of hard pack on trail. Post holes possible if off trail but otherwise fairly firm. Areas above treeline were denser due to wind compaction, but it was all basically the same. Crossings still firm and easy. No blowdowns. Lots of skiers today.

Special Equipment Used: We used snowshoes for the entire hike but one might be able to get away without them. For traction in that stuff, though, snowshoes were the way to go. Trekking poles were generally helpful for balance only. Nothing else was needed. Snow depths on the trail must still be a good four to five feet in the trees at higher elevations (much of the higher trail's canopy is now at face level making things tighter in places); so there are sections of this route in which wearing glasses might not be a bad idea so as to prevent eye injury. At least be aware of this possibility when you're up there. Sun tan lotion... that time of year :)

Comments: Hiked this one as a participant in an AMC hike (part of my training) and it was a lot of fun. It's hard for some to believe, talking to others who stayed below treeline today, but the winds on Monroe were 50+ mph. We were going to hike Washington and come down the Jewel but it was decided by our trip leader that we'd head back down the way we came after hitting the Monroe summit. Still though, it was a great day to be in the mountains.
