trails: skookumchuck trail, bushwack

conditions: a new layer of snow down low over what was probably bare ground a couple days ago. crusty early then soft on the descent. when we reached the first water crossing instead of crossing we headed up the drainage following the brook up towards the big bickford/scarface col. we eventually left the brook heading east up big bickford through open woods to the recognized summit. snow cover was continuous higher up. stable in places and softer in others. we continued a short distance over the summit to a clearing of sorts that would have great views of garfield ridge on a less cloudy day. we followed our tracks back down a bit then picked up the ridgeline heading west over to scarface. snow cover quickly thinned out. west of the summit are some small cliffs that had good views towards cannon and eagle pass. we continued mostly west then a bit more south eventually picking up our track from earlier. we crossed a number of small brooks all of which were rock hoppable today.

equipment: we booted much of the way up big bickford until we started posting through then switched to snowshoes keep them on over scarface until the snow dissipated.

comments: a real nice off trail hike. pretty much open woods the whole time with loads of moose sign along the way. was pleasantly surprised by some of the unexpected viewpoints we encountered. thanks to jeremy for great hike.
