trails: lincoln woods trail, franconia brook trail, lincoln brook trail, owls head path, bushwack, fishermans path, franconia falls trail

conditions: all was wet today. some mud along all trails with much of the usual standing/running water and mud on lincoln brook trail. ledges on the slide were generally dry in the open with some wet and slippery areas. wet on the oh path above to the summit. some blowdown on the herd path some of which has disrupted it along the ridge causing a bit of a maze in one spot in particular. from where the path hits the ridge we bushwacked south towards the spire (aka the "ears") through some scrappy woods to start where we got a bit to far to the west side of the ridge then the going was generally pretty open and good to the first of the points on the south end of the mountain. we continued a bit farther to the southern most point where some nice views could be found with a bit of poking around. back tracking to the first "ear" we dropped straight down off the ridgeline towards lincoln brook trail through some of the nicest woods i have found on owls head to date. a bit steep in spots, but great footing and open coniferous woods. some neat old roads crossed along the way. we transitioned into hardwood shortly before reaching lincoln brook a fair distance below the confluence with liberty brook finding the trail just beyond on the other side. on the way out we used the fishermans path which has been pretty well wiped out by irene in much of its northern half, but is still a clear herd path farther south where it runs father away from the brook. this led into franconia falls trail which was in fine shape. the early crossings on franconia brook trail were not a problem. the crossing of franconia brook required wading. the lower crossing of lincoln brook can be rock hopped stepping in some water. all other trail crossings on lincoln brook trail could be rock hopped with pretty minimal stepping in water. we did have to wade back across lincoln brook where we hit it coming off our bushwack.

equipment: nothing in particular.

comments: nice day on owls head. finally got a good day to head out to the spire after passing on it the last few trips out due to weather. obstructed, but nice views. great view earlier in the day from the slide as well. thanks to cynthia for another great owls head hike.
