I am planning a fast, light, and intense hike over the great range sometime next week and I was trying to get an idea of what to expect in the way of trail conditions (provided it doesnt dump snow between now and then).

In particular:
Is the icefield above the ladder on armstrong bad this year (i.e. climbing off the top of the ladder is near impossible without two ice tools)?
Is the climb on saddleback iced up to the point that ropes and ice screws/protection are a must (i.e. minimal bare rock, thick ice, or icy snow, etc). ?

Opinions are all subjective-- What is bad? When is protection a must? When describing the trail conditions if you would please be descriptive to the details of the ice, snow, rock, and trail, that would be the most useful to me.

Best Regards,
Justin
