Laurie and I are giving a Winter Preparation class in Arkville, NY, at the Catskill Center for Conservation and Development. The date is December 7th, from 6:30 to 8:30 PM. The Center's address is 43355 State Highway 28, which is 1 building to the West of the Fire House.

Approximate location

Resume: We've done all the Catskill peaks twice (or more) in Winter, as well as the North East 4000'ers in Winter.

We'll be talking about what gear to bring on a Catskill Winter hike, (and what NOT to bring), as well as how to prepare for such a hike in advance. Most of the discussion will be applicable to any Winter hike in the North East.

This will be a hands on, interactive class. We encourage you to bring your gear to the class, and we will discuss the uses of each piece of gear.

This would be a good way to prepare for the Catskill 3500 Club's Winter Weekend, which is the weekend of January 24th. (Details on that are being ironed out).

At this point, we have plenty of room, but please let us know if you plan to attend.

The new wool is very great. Better thermal control, better Oder control and just feels better.

The AMC Worcester Chapter has its annual winter hiking workshop on Wednesday, November 6th. See their website for details.

2019 version:

While the Catskills are sometimes seen as ‘easy’ peaks, they can present formidable challenges to the winter hiker. Tom and Laurie Rankin will share their winter mountaineering experiences and advice, learned over many winters of hiking in the northeast. The class is on December 7th, from 5:00pm to 7:00pm, in Livingston Manor, NY. Bring your gear and your questions for this informative and hands-on free presentation. DEC forest Rangers will also be present to share their perspectives. Light refreshments will be available. Pre-registration is required.
