trails: logging roads, bushwhacks

conditions: parked off meriden hill road a bit over a mile in from rt. 3 where it turns hards left and a logging road runs straight ahead. this road has a gate which was open in the morning, but closed when we came back out. having noted this in the past we knew it was best to park outside of it to not risk getting locked in. from there we walked up the road about half a mile and turned right onto another logging road which headed up the eastern slopes of teapot eventually hitting a log landing where we followed skid roads up and into the woods. woods had mixed going, but were never too inhospitable and we followed a northeast drainage up hitting the ridge north of the peak. open going from there to the highpoint. more mixed bag woods over towards goback then a nice stretch of open fern woods before substantial blowdown along the ridge before the summit. thick woods towards the col with savage then after a steep pitch we followed the edge of a prominent blowdown field up to the summit. to descend we dropped back to the goback/savage col then headed east with mixed woods and numerous steep drops off small cliffs before hitting skidder roads that we took down to the col with savage-goback east peak. with some time to spare we headed directly up the peak weaving around small cliffs which pushed us north eventually levelling out to the highpoint. once back in the col we followed various overgrown and often wet logging roads north with some occasional bushwacks before picking up a new road which led back down to the logging road we started out on.

equipment: nothing in particular.

comments: some drizzle in the morning turned into a really nice day for some bushwhacking up north. though headed past there was still some nice color in the trees and clear views when we could find them along the route. the various roads we followed heading down had fanstastic views to the surrounding peaks including some nice close up looks at the impressive cliffs on goback mountain. thanks to jeremy for a great day.
