One of my "go to" sources for information about New England forests and working forests is Northern Woodlands http://northernwoodlands.org/. It generally is regarded as about the most balanced coverage of working woodlands, preservation, and wildlife for the northern new England region. The winter 2013 issue has an excellent article on clearcuts and when they make sense from a forestry, wildlife and vegetation perspective. I expect those with an open mind will get a lot out of it and it may explain why an owner may chose to clearcut. Currently the article is only available in print but usually by the time the next issue come out in 3 months they have posted much of the articles on line. Its definitely worth perusing the back issues. One thing they don't post is the calendar. This is week to week description of what is typically going on in the natural world, once its adjusted to your location it is remarkably handy for determining what to look out for while in the field.

Most library's have subscriptions to it and a gift subscription is nice gift for those interested in the new England woods.
For those who want to keep their image of the New England woods as a pristine old growth forest the magazine may not of as much interest but for those who are interested in how the region and forests really work I haven't found anything close.

An example of a recent article from a prior issue may be of interest. http://northernwoodlands.org/articles/article/hurricane-1938
