Trails: Tuckerman Ravine and Lion Head (summer)

Special Equipment: Traction

Comments: It was a beautiful walk through freshly snow covered trees with light ongoing snow, but then my climbing partner and I arrived at the top of Lion Head in 60 - 70 knot winds and very low visibility. With a forecast for deteriorating conditions, we decided to turn back. Snow is very shallow, even lower down where rocks are still poking up frequently on the Tuckerman Ravine Trail. Above tree line, it's mostly just ice covered rocks. Microspikes were helpful on Tuckerman Ravine Trail which has a layer of ice under the recent snow fall. While I saw a number of people climbing Lion Head with microspikes, I found crampons very helpful. There were several areas with long ice flows that I think might have been quite challenging with microspikes. No need for snowshoes anywhere along the route.

Lion Head winter route is not open yet.
