Mount Monroe, Eisenhower and Pierce

Ammonoosuc Ravine Trail / Crawford Path

Date of Hike: 01/04/2014 (Saturday)

Trail Conditions: Ammo was lightly broken out, but in good shape, we used snowshoes till the steep part and switched to crampons, some deep snow made this decision questionable. The trail up Monroe was hard to find because of the blown and drifted snow, also no visible trail, but no real problem, used crampons, but not necessary. Between Monroe and Eisenhower the trail was really hard to follow, the path we cut goes all over the place, but will get you there. Lots of deep snow drifts, was slow going even after switching back to snowshoes. A few people had gone between Eisenhower and Pierce, but still lots of false trails as the drifting made it hard to find the cairns. From Pierce on down the trail was in really good shape and easy going.

Special Equipment Required: Snowshoes because of snow drifts, crampons were nice but you could do without them (the ice was very hard and the snowshoe crampons would not dig into it). Temps were remarkably mild and didn't need much of the usually above tree line gear, sunglasses were a good idea.

Comments: Beautiful day with great views. Only saw three other people the whole day. Temperature inversion made it a really interesting day. When we left a car at the end of the Crawford Path it was -10, but at the Ammo trail head it was 1.
