trails: piper mountain trail, piper-whiteface link, whiteface mountain trail, old piper trail, white trail, green trail, carriage road

conditions: good parking plowed out before gate at base of belknap carriage road and more along side of road. piper mountain trail had packed snow low with some bare ground then lots of flow ice up to the north ledges. lots of bare rock with some snow up on the ledges. heading towards whiteface on the link the steeper ledges generally had ok snow cover with some large avoidable flows of ice. the trail up whiteface was packed out hard by snowmobiles and had some significant sections of ice. old piper trail a mix of packed snow and ice as was white trail up belknap which was mostly free of ice until high on the mountain. a bit of bare ground in areas too. leaving belknap on the green trail there was good snow coverage to start then a lot of substantial flow ice down to the old access road portion of the trail. this section was snowmobile packed with continued significant ice. the carriage road was a mixed bag of hard snow, bare dirt and ice. at no point was there probably more than 6-8 inches of snow left in the woods except for drifted areas.

equipment: aggressive light traction, i used hillsound microspikes, for all the ice.

comments: beautiful day in the belknap range. nice temps and blue skies with good views along the way. impressive amounts of ice on some of the trails that it will take a fair amount of new snow to cover up. great to be out.
