Waumbek, South Weeks via Starr King Tr. & Kilkenny Ridge Tr. - 1/18/14
What began as a straightforward hike to Waumbek ended with the decision to redline the pesky 2.5 mile section I needed in between Waumbek and Weeks.
As other trip reports suggest, there is very little snow up to Waumbek; significant ice flows at around 3500' require light traction and care. While one could bareboot the lower section of the Starr King Trail, most of us wore Microspikes the entire day.... and I was wishing for Hillsounds+ on the ice flows.
The Kilkenny Ridge Trail from Waumbek to So. Weeks had 2-4 inches of snow and showed no evidence of the group that went through recently. And while there are numerous blowdowns on this section, the woods are open and the blowdowns are super easy to navigate around. However, blazing is light, and care must be taken to find the trail again after getting around each blowdown.
Note: Ken R. found his first moose antler, just recently shed... (it still had traces of blood at its base).
