Date of Hike: February 1, 2014

Trail Conditions: Starting out: 2-3" of powder on hardpack/ice, gradually increasing to 6" at the summit. All of the ice was snow-covered but foot traffic yesterday exposed some of it as the day wore on, particularly so on the steep sections of the Kilkenny. The numerous crossings on Bunnell Notch Trail were either bridged or hopable. Postholing was not an issue.

Special Equipment Used: We made the entire run with light traction (microspikes) and poles. Poles helped with the open crossings. Carried crampons but did not need them. Left the snowshoes in the car but would have used them on the Kilkenny from the jct. with the old Mt. Cabot Trail.

Comments: It turned out to be a beautiful day and the rain/snow forecasted for late afternoon did not materialize. 38th any season for Abby, our 24 pound rescue mutt. 2nd time for us and this time enjoyed the views from Bunnell Rock and the old fire tower area. The Cabin was a busy place at lunchtime. :)
