Trail Conditions: all trails had been broken out before the last snow fall. The route from the old trailhead to the new was broken out by hikers who likely climbed Hale Wednesday. The North Twin Trail was broken until the start of the FWT to Hale. From there, it was about 4-6 inches of new snow over broken trail until halfway up the trail when it varied from 6-12 inches and totally blown in. No blow downs. Crossings all bridged. Herd path to avoid first two crossings is obvious.
Special equipment: snowshoes from trailhead to finish. No other option was going to work today. Nice to have some actual snow on the trails. Poles would have helped with backslipping in spots. Gaiters were nice with the deep, soft snow in places.
Comments: gorgeous sunny day perfect for snowshoeing. We were planning the Twins and GH, but knew trail breaking might cause a change in plans. A combination of time of day and leg fatigue lead us both to opt for a one summit day. We headed back out the way we came. Whatever was there yesterday is going to have a mix of rain, sleet, and freezing rain to modify it today. Thanks for a great hike Dan.
