2014 Spring Wildflower Thread

We're off to a bit of a late start this year, and it's threatening to be very late in some areas.

Ice flowing down the river this morning, a foot of snow in the yard in SeNH, three feet around the base of Chocorua last weekend...and no sign of the crocuses or skunk cabbage...

BUT...Optimistically...
This thread is a way to record the chronology and phenology of spring wildflowers. It's a place to share your photography of flowers, and flower scenics. It's a place to ask questions, identify species and learn.

Please join us this year, as the history of these threads provides an invaluable resource.

You can usually find this info in the EXIF data in each image file (unless a post-processing program has removed it). Just download the file and examine it with a tool such as exiftool http://owl.phy.queensu.ca/~phil/exiftool/ (multiplatform, free).

To download an image:
* from vftt: click on "reply with quote" and URL will be visible or in firefox: click on "Tools" > "Page info" > "media" and you will be able to see the urls of all images on the page. (I don't use other browsers, but hopefully they have a similar capability.)
* use your favorite downloader, a browser to download the image file, or download from the "media" page "save as" button.
* examine the EXIF (generally gives the camera and lens models and the focus and exposure info).

Skunk cabbage is blooming in eastern Massachusetts.



Also have recently seen mourning cloaks and a garter snake, plus various birds - eastern bluebird and eastern phoebe being two I'm particularly fond of.

PS I always wondered what the mourning cloaks could find to eat when they emerged from hibernation so early. I recently read that they drink tree sap.

I don't know, maybe not a flower per se, but Pussy-willows FINALLY out here at Kingston State Park, Kingston, NH…

I was actually surprised to find these Round-lobed Hepatica (Anemone americana) today, 4/7 in Pawtuckaway SP. There is still a lot of snow in the woods and the roads are a mix of packed snow/ice and mud. I found these on a southern facing slope clear of snow.

Checked the usual spots by my workplace today (eastern Mass.) and found trout lily in full bloom. If you recall the toadshades I've posted before, they're budding now.

Not much going on in the Upper Valley yet. I have seen coltsfoot, as well as some tree/shrubs in bloom (beaked hazelnut, silver maple), but not much in the way of actual flowers. Will head to a spot where I always see my first hepatica tomorrow afternoon. Here's hoping!

The Boston area just exploded in green. Not much is flowering (wood anemone and bellwort are starting, and there is trout lily if you know where to find it) but shoots are everywhere: fiddleheads, mayflowers, irises, clintonia, and more.
