I'm trying to map out the Pemi Loop "Death March" by segment so I can determine which direction to take. There's obviously something wrong with my clockwise version. Can anyone spot the errors? I know you're the experts on whom I can depend. Thank you and, if this has already been discussed, my apologies, but I couldn't find anything.

Thanks Rich. This is very detailed. It looks like clockwise would be best simply because the biggest gains are before the halfway point, and I've been on Bondcliff Trail heading south and it's a snap.

Running down Osceo is really nice at the end of the day - and I really liked the 5 mile run on the Wilderness trail to start it. I wouldn't want to run out the full length of the Wilderness Trail at the end of the day - I hate that.

The elevation profile isn't everything. :)

Climbing up South Twin was the least fun part of the clockwise loop for me. I would suggest taking a break on South Twin rather than at the hut, tempting as it may be.

This is a bit off topic but I have a question on the Inner Pemi Loop (the "lollipop" I think is what everyone appears to be referring to it as - Lincoln Woods Trail, Lincoln Brook Trail and Franconia Brook Trail): what is the name of the bushwhack/herd path that by passes the difficult crossings on the Lincoln Brook Trail and is it easily followed in summer (i.e. like the North Twin herd path that skips the first two crossings)? I seem to remember some older posts about this but I forget the names and I forget if it was for summer or winter. It also sounded like there was more than one option.

I am also planning a Pemi Loop hike this summer and would like to pre-hike the areas in the valley should I decide to bail off the ridge and take a shorter route out. I have not been beyond the Owl Head junction on Lincoln Brook Trail or beyond the Lincoln Brook Trail junction before and from what I was told in another thread these areas have improved but are still a little confusing. I'd imagine if it was dark or poor weather it could be an issue as well.

If anyone has any info on the area I'd appreciate it. Thanks.

We have been referring to LW, East Side Rd, Cedar Brook Tr, Wilderness Tr, Thoreau Falls Tr, Ethan Pond Tr, Shoal Pond Tr., Wilderness Tr, Cedar Brook Tr, and East Side Rd to LW route as the Pemi lollipop. (I have done it twice on skis.)

Technically, the valley route around Owls Head from LW could also be described as a lollipop. Perhaps it should be called the Western Pemi lollipop or Owls Head lollipop to distinguish from the above.

IIRC, Steve Smith reported hiking the WPL/OHL on his blog a few years ago. He did it in last summer or early fall minimize the difficulty of stream crossings (and maybe also bugs).

DayTrip, you're probably thinking of the Black Pond and Franconia Falls bushwhack options. See here: http://www.summitpost.org/owl-s-head-path-west-slide/165816#chapter_3

These are not at all like the North Twin bypass route, which is a trail in all but name. These routes can be quite obvious in winter when there are footprints to follow, but will usually require the ability to follow a compass and/or a stream.

I do this loop twice a year in order to maintain the Lincoln Brook Trail from the OH silde to Camp 13. The Franconia Brook Trail is much, much easier to follow than the Lincoln Brook Trail. There is a short re-route on the FBT around a beaver pond at the south end but the rest of it is like a highway, following the old RR cut.

The only time I could see taking the LBT would be if you bushwhacked east off of the Franconia ridge. The stream crossing on both trails can be difficult in the spring.

I think the only confusing part of the LBT is just north of the slide due to herdpaths for camping sites, YMMV. Hike the loop counter-clockwise for less navigation issues.
