Date of Hike: April 25, 2014

Trails: Ammonusuc Ravine Trail, Crawford Path, Monroe Loop, Eisenhower Loop, Webster Cliff Trail, Jackson Branch, Webster-Jackson Trail

Trail Conditions: The Ammonusuc Ravine trail started out covered in a thin layer of ice with an inch or two of fresh snow. As we continued to the Gem pool the trail depth increased. From the gem pool to the hut the trail was well covered in snow and ice. The hike from the hut to Mt Monroe again was completely covered in snow and ice. The rocks on the top of Monroe were covered in rime ice. Between Monroe and Eisenhower the Crawford Path was covered in a thin layer of snow, ice or bare rocks. The top of Eisenhower had a little bit of rime ice on it. The trip between Eisenhower and Pierce was again a combination of snow, ice and bare rock. The sections in the trees/scrub had greater snow depths. Up to this point in our hike the trails were firm and no issues with postholing. The trail between Pierce and Jackson was well covered in snow. Most of the monorails we saw were during this part of the hike. It was now afternoon and and the trail was getting softer, but we still didn't have any issues with postholing. The summit of Jackson was bare rock with some mud. Once we got back into the trees on the Jackson Branch the trail was well covered in snow and ice. There was a lot of sections of old ice floes. The snow and ice on the Webster-Jackson trail was a lot thinner with short sections of bare trail and rocks.

Special Equipment Used: Light traction was used most of the day, but a times some of us barebooted for a while to save our spikes on the Crawford Path on sections between Monroe and Eisenhower.

Comments: It was a beautiful day for a Southern Presi hike. It was windy enough at the hut to layer up and for face protection on Monroe. As the day went on the winds decreased and by the time we got to Jackson wind was not an issue. Views were great. There was a crew working in the Lake of the Clouds hut doing project work and a crew at Mizpah getting it ready for Self Service.
