Nice video, kind of unfair predicting ice outs on hydro controlled lake . They did some heavy draws the last week based on the flow at the forks http://waterdata.usgs.gov/me/nwis/uv/?site_no=01042500&PARAmeter_cd=00065,00060 and it looks like they stopped today once the ice broke loose.

I was under the impression it had to do with navigability, but lots of things from my childhood turned out to be lies, so who knows.

I don't know how Moosehead works but some lakes in Maine have a cement block on the ice connected to a battery powered clock. When the block breaks through the batteries are disconnected and the clock stops marking the official time for ice out. Again, I don't know if this done everywhere but recently read an article up here about that practice.
