A really cool time-lapse video of moosehead lake today. At the bottom of the page, the left video really shows the ice breaking up.

Put the right time lapse video into full screen mode, put your monitor up high (or slouch in your chair) and let it rip. You'll see!

What constitutes ice-out? Every little bit gone?

I was under the impression it had to do with navigability, but lots of things from my childhood turned out to be lies, so who knows.

I don't know how Moosehead works but some lakes in Maine have a cement block on the ice connected to a battery powered clock. When the block breaks through the batteries are disconnected and the clock stops marking the official time for ice out. Again, I don't know if this done everywhere but recently read an article up here about that practice.
