Very good piece. My thought was that, for a year or two, the only missions up Everest should be clean up missions, where no one summits, and the whole point is to haul out as much accumulated refuse as possible. That might make the mountain a bit happier.

Going forward, there might also ought to be a rule requiring a rest year for the mountain every so often and a clean-up year. And an effort to publicize and tout other summits and lower-altitude treks through the passes. A friend of mine did one of these a few months back and passed through Everest's south base camp. There's still plenty of danger to the participants, but maybe a redirected focus might reduce stress on Everest while generating tourism for Nepal. Nepal might also consider raising the price for E permits, in conjunction with China. It's a rich person's game as it is, might as well raise the price to reflect the impact.
