Are there any designated camping areas along the Great Gulf Trail, or should I just make sure I meet the 200' rule? In either case, do you have any recommendations? The further in the better, although I see from the WMG that the 200' rule becomes a quarter mile rule after the Sphinx Trail intersection.

I'm sure others know more of these, but I was on the Six Husbands Trail and Great Gulf Trail a few weeks ago, and found several of those official USFS tent sites that are marked with a small tenting sign and have a bear box. The highest one I saw was on the Buttress Trail just across the stream from the intersection with the Six Husbands Trail. There were several on the Great Gulf Trail between Six Husbands and Osgood. A lot of them actually looked like pretty nice camp sites, too.

There is also a nice spot at the Sphinx Trail Junction.

Is that an official USFS site? 'Cause that would be an ideal location for me.

I know there are USFS site(s) at the intersection with the Wamsutta Trail, which is nearby.

I don't recall seeing an official site here but it is a well used location.
Be advised that this is within the 1/4 mile exclusion area, so if it is not an official site, it would be illegal.

I don't believe it is an official USFS site. It is below the junction, and easy to get 200' off trail, so you're good. The sites are clearly heavily used and quite hardened. There are tons of them. We camped there after coming down the Sphinx trail a couple years ago and were quite happy with it.

I ended up camping about a quarter mile past the Wamsutta Trail intersection, at a signed site. The next day I passed another (unsigned) site a little before the Sphinx Trail intersection. It wasn't nearly 200' back, but I didn't check if there were more sites further in.
