I checked out their web site. It looks like a setup for people to get in trouble -- huge group (probably in violation of state forest & park regs, by the looks of it), 50 miles of the LT in winter ... even given this year's forgiving trail conditions, App Gap to Smuggler's Notch in a single nonstop deathmarch is a hellacious undertaking. Considerably harder than a Lonesome > Carter traverse, IMO.

Given the lack of info in the story I am resisting the urge to get out the pitchfork.;) It could be that this was just a routine rescue for some folks who just happened to be members of this group but it sure does seem to have the potential to be one of the reasons why NH charges for some rescues.
