Lo and behold today, the rotted out wooden bridge at mile 2.4 of the Caribou Valkey Road - the one that looked like it was going to fall through any moments- was replaced recently with a beautiful new one. A few off the remaining ones are still not in super shape, particularly the one at 2.2 mi right before it- but this was an unexpected delight today for the family mini van.

In a recent conversation with an employee at the Maine Huts and Trails Flagstaff Hut, she mentioned that the MHT group's next hut would be somewhere near Sugarloaf / Redington.

Given how MHT supplies its huts, improvements to the CVR might be the first step in this process.

Thats logical, but it makes me wonder where the trail to the hut would run. Above Crocker Cirque? Crossing the AT? Or on the Sugarloaf/Spaulding side of the river? Or paralleling the AT on the other side of the Crockers? Might make it easier to ascend Redington from that side.

I got copied on some MATC minutes last year that discussed the future AT corridor crossing The actual location of the hut wasn't discussed but there was discussion that the new MHT route would most likely cross the AT corridor at the current AT crossing of the CVR. MHTs goal originally was intended to be the Mahoosucs to Moosehead but the current goal is connect up with Rangeley. Obviously they aren't going to get an easement to the Navy facility so the logical route is to head west to Caribou Pond then north up on the current snowmobile route between Redington and Crocker then west along the north boundary of the Navy Area into Dallas Plantation then cross country to Saddleback Pond. Its roughly 13 miles from the Stratton Book hut to Caribou Pond by swinging north of the Sugarloaf complex so Caribou Pond may be the logical place for a hut. The block of land north of the Navy Facility has been on the market for several years so that may put a crimp in the plans past Caribou Pond. The goal is to get a week long hut to hut trip and currently they only have 4 huts which is not enough to advertise week long trips to an national and international client base. Add in a hut at Caribou Pond and possibly Saddleback Pond and they have a 6 hut system that is much easier to market.

At one point the next hut was reportedly to be south of Sugarloaf so the route seems to be in flux. They may have been dead ended by the Mt Abraham land buy a few years back.
