Please join us for our annual trailhead and backcountry steward training session on April 7th. Registration will take place from 8 - 8:30 a.m. where we will handle check-in and paper work The morning (Trailhead Steward) session will focus on the background and structure of our programs as well as ways to approach the public for a quick informative interaction. The afternoon (Backcountry Steward) session provides additional training for those interested in taking those messages on the trail while hiking and performing light maintenance tasks. Those signing up for the afternoon session must attend the morning session, you are encouraged to attend both.*

Speakers from U. S. Forest Service administration, law enforcement, NH Fish and Game, NH State Parks as well as seasoned stewards from last year provide an engaging and interactive discussion of White Mountain HikeSafe recommendations, search and rescue incidents as well as how stewards help to reduce these incidents and their stories.

This session is required for all those wanting to volunteer as a steward in 2018. These sessions provide the knowledge, and skills necessary to engage hikers in a brief discussion about hiking safely. While this training is required to volunteer during the season, attendance at training does not equate a commitment to become a volunteer for the season.

Description

The White Mountain National Forest (WMNF) is a recreation destination for hikers around the world. With over 1200 miles of trails, the WMNF sees 5 to 6 million visitors a year, and numbers are on the rise! This rise in visitation has also brought an uptick in the number of search and rescue incidents as more and more unprepared hikers hit the trail. This program seeks to combat this issue through its mission.

The Trailhead Steward Program encourages outdoor safety and conservation in the WMNF by interacting with hikers, backpackers and climbers at trailheads to promote responsible enjoyment and protection of public land.

Choose one of five busy trailheads to staff on weekends—typical shift is 4-5 hrs, two shifts required
Provide safety, weather and leave no trace information to forest visitors at trailheads before they begin their trip
Ability to approach forest visitors and educate on outdoor safety while representing the WMNF in a volunteer uniform
Desired Qualifications:

Good communication skills!
Knowledge of White Mountain trails and fluency in French a plus
