On Saturday, March 9, 2019, along with my friends, my wife, and my faithful hiking companion Gryffin, I finished the New England Hundred Highest list in (calendar, solstice to equinox) winter. I would like to recognize that my wife came with me on what was only her third ever winter hike and first in snowshoes with televators, and that my friends welcomed her and were encouraging the entire day. For me, this embodied the true spirit and nature of hiking and transcended the hiking for a patch that I, and others, some times get caught up in.

Towards the end of this winter, two other companions, Alex (alexmtn) and Erik (hikersinger), whittled down their lists so all three of us were left with only East Baldpate, but due to family commitments, we couldn't find a mutually agreeable date. So, congratulations to Erik for finishing the day prior and to Alex in advance - he should get there this season. Throwing in Michael (akafuzzjones) should make at least four finishers of this list in 2018-19.

Saturday was 4th in a line of clear days, with some cold and some wind, and while it felt like winter, it was pleasant enough to take our time and enjoy the nearly unlimited views, including both the White Mountains (Old Speck, Mahoosucs and Presidential Range) to the west and the Rangeley peaks (Saddlebacks, Bigelows, Crockers/Redington, Sugarloaf/Spaulding/Abraham). Conditions were excellent for snowshoeing through West Baldpate and down into the col, and up to East was either spikes-and-hunt-for-snow, or bareboot-and-hunt-for-exposed-rock.

Here are some pictures for the day. Enjoy!
