Kind of embarrassing to call for help just .3m from the finish line but I guess that's the definition of being disoriented. The Jewell does seem to go on forever if you're tired. All's well that ends well.

I agree, if they called after 9:00, had they used the flashlight on another phone. Four children, age 7-14, I assume the 14 year old had a phone, was his wife there too? That would be a third phone, likely. The tree cover in that area is pretty dense so in the dark I could see them being disoriented. They may have been near the junction with the short cut out to Base Station and in the dark, that trail junction may have cause confusion.
