David Roberts was probably my favorite outdoor essay writer. Looking at my bookshelf, I see that I have three books of essays (On the Ridge Between Life and Death, Moments of Doubt, and Escape Routes), and the book In Search of the Old Ones. All highly recommended. He wrote about rock-climbs, alpine climbs, and general exploration/ trekking. Some very intense stories in there.

My favorite is The Mountain of My Fear. Read it in High School. He was a great author and climber. I'm sorry to hear of this.

I forgot to recommend the Roberts' book "Finding Everett Ruess: The Life and Unsolved Disappearance of a Legendary Wilderness Explorer". A very strange compelling story of a vagabond explorer who disappeared and has never been found. In the same genre as the stories of Chris McCandless or John Waterman.
