I can't tell from that description on where he was. I see he was doing a short hike and was descending. That could be parking up high doing the Alpine Zone walk and descending the trail a little bit to feel like he was on the wall

OR

starting on the bottom and thinking, maybe I can go up the to the top of the fan so I can look over the trees or feel like I am up on the head wall.

Am I missing something?

I agree the press release is lacking detail. If he had been going down the headwall from Alpine Garden, that is a no/no. If on the other hand he had taken a hike up to some point on the upper Huntington Ravine trail and then decided to head down before the hard stuff that is another story.

Exactly. I couldn’t understand what they were saying. Guy seemed up there in age to be attacking the head wall, but there are climbers in their 70’s for sure.
