I don't think "works of art" topo maps are limited to CH. I found the hiking topo maps in France to be far more detailled than what is customary in the US. And considering the (outdated) state of the USGS maps, our mapping is frankly and embarrasment. The only thing that we do better is more common use of plastic and tyvek for hiking maps.
 
There was a PBS special about the Washburn Map of Everest and I remember a section on using Swiss mapmakers to make the map. Washburn was working on the Mt Washington Map in his spare time. What was quite impressive at the time was that the file output from the map was used to make a flattened 3D version of the map at a room scale. IME hosted it for quite a while.
